Between the wine, the food and the lively conversation you were satiated and warm despite the cold and snow outside. All the people you loved most were in one room. Sonya and Nick were dancing while Frank played from the old record player. Cesaria was opening another bottle of wine, smiling and happy.
She took the chair beside you and patted your leg. Sonya attempted to dip Nick, almost dropping him. You laughed and Cesaria leaned in close to you. “It’s good to see you smile again, mi querido.”
You flicked your eyes to her. Did she know what happened? Did Nick talk to her? “How-”
“How did I know?” She shrugged her shoulders. “A mother knows. When I saw the two of you together, you were out of sync.“
“We were. But things…we’re getting better.” You leaned over and kissed her cheek. “Thank you, Mamì.”
“Can I steal my wife for a dance?” Nick bowed.
“It would be my pleasure.” Nick took your hand, holding you close to his chest.
“Ready?”
Before you could respond he twirled you away from him then back. You crashed into his chest laughing.
