Short version: Sonny flips.
Long version goes a little like this…
It’s about a month later when he feels comfortable enough for you to come back into the precinct. You know that the more time goes by the more anxious he’ll be the next time you do come in, so you suggest swinging by with him in the morning to bring the team coffee. He agrees, somewhat reluctantly, but it goes well. At first, anyway. You’re laughing with the team and going to sip your coffee when movement near you catches your eye. You freeze and smile at the gentleman coming towards you, trying to calm your heartbeat which just tripped into over time. The man has barely made it to you, mistaking you for one of the team since you’re all huddled together and you’re dressed up for work, and opened his mouth to ask for help when Sonny stands and shoves you behind him.
He’s immediately yelling in the guys face, telling him to take a step back as a hand drops to the gun on his hip. The squad jumps to their feet and try to calm Sonny down, but he’s not hearing any of it. The poor guy throws his hands up in the air in surrender and tries to stutter out that he just needs help, he didn’t do anything, but the more he talks the more agitated Sonny becomes. His gun is out of the holster now and he’s pointing it in the guy’s face, yelling at him to move back, what does he want, why did he come up to you. Just making no sense and being irrational. The rest of the room is in a flurry now, Sonny is holding a gun on a civilian in the middle of the squad, and you’re trying to get them all to shut up so that he can hear you and calm down.
You don’t touch him, afraid that it will trip him off, but you keep up a running stream of soothing words in his ear. Telling him to drop the gun, that nothing is wrong, that the man just needs some help. He’s faltering slightly and eventually Nick takes a big step between Sonny and the man and Sonny drops his gun immediately, letting it hang limply by his side. Amanda escorts the man away and everyone else lets out a big breath. You let your hands finally fall to Sonny’s shoulders, comforting him from behind and just barely getting a chair under him as he collapses. Nick is crouched down in front of him, talking to him gently and you turn to give Olivia and Fin a concerned look.
Olivia finally sends Sonny back home that day and he’s on desk duty for the next week or so. This is the second time you seriously consider bringing up your idea of therapy to him. The third time is after the car accident and you know what they say about third time being the charm…
(also I love Nick & Sonny’s friendship in this ‘verse so let me know if you want to know exactly what he said to Sonny in that moment)
