“Surprise!” you announced to Sonny as you placed a cup of coffee on his desk. He startled and looked up, surprise melting into affection when he noticed it was you. He set down the file he was combing over and stood to greet you with a hug.

“Doll,” he breathed with a smile on his face as he wrapped his arms around you. “What’re you doing here?”

“Thought I’d bring you some coffee. Needed to get some fresh air,” you replied with a little shrug as you leaned back to perch on his desk. He reached down to push some papers out of the way, tossing a take out container in the trash with a rueful look as you gave him a knowing raise of your eyebrow.

“Sorry about the mess,” he apologized, but you waved him away.

“I’m not here to comment on the state of your desk, detective,” you assured him with a little grin.

“Nick isn’t here right now. He and Lieu went out to run down a lead…” Sonny trailed off with a quick glance towards what you knew was Nick’s desk.

“I know. I came to see you,” you told him. “Can you walk me back down? I know you’re busy so I don’t want to take up too much of your time.” He stretched and nodded immediately, pushing his chair under the desk and offering his arm for you to settle your hand in the crook of his elbow.

Sonny led you back out through the bustle of activity in the room, neatly sidestepping a struggling man in handcuffs who was swearing loudly at the officers leading him away. Phones were ringing in the background and you wondered not for the first time how he could even concentrate during the day. He cut an expert path to the elevators and leaned on the button to call it up. When the doors open he ushered you inside and held his arm in front of the frame to make sure they wouldn’t close early. The two of you rode back down in silence and you knew he was dying to know what had brought you to drop by the precinct in the middle of the day. It was a few more minutes before you were in a relatively quiet location, giving polite smiles to the officers passing by before Sonny tugged you to a less trafficked corner of the building.

“You’re killing me, doll,” Sonny finally admitted with a smile playing at his lips. His eyes looked concerned and you brought up a hand to thumb at his bottom lip briefly before letting your hand fall back by your side.

“What? A girl can’t drop by to say hello to one of her boyfriends?” you asked innocently. You laughed at the dirty look Sonny gave you and he jutted a hip out and pursed his lips at you.

“I am a cop, you know,” he reminded you pointedly.

“And a very good one,” you answered smoothly. He looked away for a second to try to hide the pleased expression on his face and you gave him a wide grin before getting a little more serious.

“I, uh, just wanted to talk to you about Nick. Or rather…reassure you? About Nick,” you started. His expression shifted to something more shuttered so you rushed to go on. “It’s not bad! It’s good. I just…I mean, I think you guys should talk to each other about it, but I wanted to at least tell you—he’s in, Sonny. He’s all in. He really cares for you and he’s attracted to you and he…even though he sometimes doesn’t show it, or has a hard time showing it, he’s happy to be in this relationship with both of us.”

“He tell you that?” Sonny asked in a purposefully bland tone as he turned his head and squinted at something in the distance behind you. You nodded and reached down to squeeze his hand.

“Not in those exact words, but yes he did,” you replied with a quick smile. “I thought you should know. And I thought you deserved a decent cup of coffee,” you added wryly. He ducked his head, but when he raised his eyes to meet you again his face was still a little pink. He was fighting the pleased smile that was stretching over his face and you smiled back up at him.

“Thank you…for the coffee and the—”

“You’re welcome,” you cut him off with a quick kiss to his cheek. “See you both tomorrow for dinner.” Sonny nodded and with a last squeeze of his hand you turned to descend down the steps. You threw one last look at Sonny over your shoulder and when you caught him staring at your butt as you walked off you threw him a wink before continuing down the sidewalk to the subway to go back uptown to work.

I love the polyverse!
