âAlright, whoâs ready for some warm butterbeer?â Sonny asks as he comes back into the living room carefully balancing a tray full of mugs.
A chorus of affirmation fills the room as his nephew and nieces shoot their hands up. His parents had agreed to watch their grandchildren for the weekend, but Sonny being Sonny decided to stick around part of the evening. A Harry Potter marathon was on the agenda and the familiar soundtrack looped as the movie was waiting to be played.
âOkay, everyone sit back down. You have to be good if you want to get your snacks,â Sonny directed gently as he wound his way through pillows tossed on the floor.
They straightened up and listened obediently, faces turned up in eager anticipation, and you sent up a silent prayer of thanks that you werenât responsible for putting them to bed later. There was a fifty percent chance of them all falling asleep during the movie, but also an equal possibility of them being wide awake and bouncing off the walls. Sonny didnât seem too concerned as he carefully placed half full mugs in their hands before sitting back down beside you.
âEveryone have their snacks ready?â Sonny asked and a chorus of cheers went up. He laughed a little and you hid your own laugh in the shoulder of his sweatshirt. It was the one from Fordham and after several years it was finally beginning to mould itself to his broad shoulders.
âEveryone ready to hop on the Hogwarts Express and say, âsee you later, Mugglesâ?â he asked as he reached for the remote.
âWeâre ready, Uncle Sonny,â one of his nieces turned to reply with a solemn expression. You reached out to rub her arm, ducking your face close to hers.
âYou know weâre not going anywhere, right, my love?â you asked her gently at her resigned expression. You and Sonny exchanged a look over her head and you looked back down at her for her response.
âI thought we were leaving to take the Hogwarts Express,â she whispered. âKyle said we wonât see mommy and daddy until next year.â
âAww, baby cakes, Kyle was fibbing,â you reassured her as you carefully picked her up and situated her between you and Sonny. âMommy and daddy will be back in two days. Tonight weâre going to watch a movie and tomorrow nonna and nonno are going to take you to the zoo!â you told her excitedly.
âPromise?â she asked with the same serious expression after a few beats.
âI promise, love bug,â you confirmed, bending down to rub your nose against hers lightly. She giggled and you pulled back and nodded at Sonny to start the movie.
The opening flash of logos crossed the screen as you picked up the bowl of popcorn on your other side and settled it into your lap. She reached for it tentatively and when you smiled in encouragement she dug her little fist into the bowl with a smile of her own. She stuffed some popcorn in her mouth as the dialogue started, already enraptured with the movie, and you let out a small breath of relief. You startled slightly a moment later as you felt something touch the hand that was braced begin you, but you relaxed when you realized it was Sonnyâs hand. When you looked over he squeezed slightly and you winked back before turning and watching the movie.
