Music lightly plays through your apartment and the taste of hot chocolate and peppermint plays on your tongue. The lights dimmed and the curtains pulled open as you look out at the lights of the city. This is a kind of peacefulness you aren’t used to, the kind that is used as a distraction from the chaos, a forced peace; Is that even really peace if you are forcing it? Your stomach does somersaults and not in the intoxicatingly lovely way but in the way that makes the contents churn and threaten to spill from your mouth.
A small knock brings your hesitant attention to the closed door across the room. Standing to your feet, the blanket that was draped across your lap falls to the floor and you set the mug down on the end table to make your way to the door. It had to be one of two people and one of them you have been stressing about since you saw him. Gathering your composure and breath, you pull the door open in one smooth, slow motion. Flowers are the first thing you see, those then the man holding them. He is tall, muscular, wearing a suit, hair a mess as if he had run his fingers through it one too many times, and big ears. His eyes were sad and pleading as he held the flowers out to you.
“Come in.” You step back, flipping on the light and taking the flowers in your hand as he walks through the threshold. “Let me put this in a vase.” You say as you close the door and make your way around to the kitchen with him following you.

Sonny had invited you out for drinks with the squad one night. The two of you had been getting pretty close lately, and he wanted to celebrate winning a big case with you. He was too shy to admit it, but he had developed quite the school-boy crush on you since you met in his trauma support group.
He saw you from across the room and his heart skipped a beat. Quickly he made his way over to your place at the bar. You turned to him with a warm smile when he gently placed a hand on your shoulder to let you know he was there.
“Hey Sonny!” you exclaimed, pulling him in for a tight hug. “Congratulations on the verdict! I know this case was a tough one.”
“Thanks doll” he beamed, trying his best to keep from blushing. The both of you let the hug linger far too long for it to be considered just friendly. Sonny couldn’t have pulled away sooner if he wanted to. You felt way too perfect in his arms, and the smell of your shampoo had become a comfort to him.

A car horn screams out into the night, in one continuous screech. It’s close but too far away to be coming from the vehicle you sit pinned in by the seatbelt, drawn tight to your body. Smoke rises of from one or both of the vehicles while gasoline drips, you can tell from the pungent and terrifying smell that finds it’s way to your nostrils as you take in shaky breaths. You still have your eyes squeezed shut, afraid to open them and catch a glimpse of the likely nightmarish scene. You’ve been in a few accidents and small fender benders before that left you almost frozen in fear but none of them can compare to this moment right here. You’ve never been so scared, frozen isn’t even the word to describe the stock-still act your body has taken up. Paralyzed with fear is a better way to get across the standstill you are stuck in because you know if you open your eyes you will be tempted to find whatever is causing the growing pain that is raging through your body.
