You let yourself into the house wearily after a long shift. You knew it had felt particularly tough because you hadn’t had a proper night’s rest. You were looking forward to having the next few days off and as you shut the door softly behind you and keyed on the alarm you sagged a little, happy to at least be in a familiar place. It didn’t feel quite like home, not right now, but it was better than Nick’s old lady’s apartment. A noise from the living room drew your attention and you startled and flicked on the light the same time as you reached into your bag for the gun you knew was there. Before you could draw it out you realized it was just Sonny and you let out a sigh of relief as you kicked off your shoes.
“Scared the shit out of me,” you groused.
“Sorry. Wanted to make sure you got home okay,” Sonny apologized with a regretful expression and you glanced over at him before fixing your gaze down the hall.
“I’ll be fine once my heart rate comes back down,” you muttered before heading into the kitchen to grab something to drink. Sonny was sitting in the same position when you exited the kitchen with drink in hand and you gave him a curious look.
“Okay. Well…I’m headed to bed,” you announced stiffly and Sonny rose to his feet at that. He walked towards you and you took a step back which made him pause. He wrung his hands a little before reaching up to rub the back of his neck.
“I changed the sheets,” Sonny blurted out and you frowned a little. “I put the ones on that you really like—your favorites? I also picked up food in case you’re hungry. Wasn’t sure if you would want breakfast or dinner so I got both. I can warm them up for you while you shower if you want. I won’t—I know you don’t want to talk so I won’t—we have the morning, but—” Sonny rambled on nervously. You shifted, growing more uncomfortable the longer he talked before you finally had to cut him off.
“I’m sleeping in the guest room,” you cut in bluntly. Sonny’s mouth closed with a click and his expression went from shock to hurt to disappointment to resignation in a matter of moments. “And…the food and the sheets—it all sounds nice, Sonny, really. I just want to go to sleep, though. It’s been a long couple of days,” you said in a somewhat apologetic tone with a small shrug of a shoulder. Sonny nodded and clasped his hands together before waving away your explanation.
“Yes, right. I—of course. I didn’t mean to—” he tried to say.
“It’s a nice gesture,” you interrupted in a softer voice with a small smile. “I’m just…tired.” Sonny nodded again.
“Yes, of course. I’ll let you get to…you should take the bed, though. I won’t—well, you should take our bed. You need the rest. I’ll take the guest room,” Sonny replied and you bit your lip, opening your mouth to refuse before he continued. “Please,” he said in a small voice and you closed your mouth. “Let me—just. Please.” It was your turn to nod and you gave him another small smile.
“Alright. Thank you for putting on my favorite sheets,” you said again and Sonny gave you a faint smile.
You started past him to head down the hall and he went to grab you, an automatic gesture anytime you were in arm’s distance of him. This time you shrank away and he cut himself off abruptly, dropping his arm to his side and stepping back to give you space. Space wasn’t even in your vocabularies and you knew it had to be killing him to not touch you. Even when you two fought you were still up under each other, normally. This was different, though, and the physical space between you was nothing compared to the yawning chasm you felt emotionally.
“If you need anything, just holler,” Sonny said in a subdued tone and you turned to give him an acknowledging look.
“Of course. Thank you. Night, Sonny,” you bid as you continued down the hall towards the bedroom.
So. At least she’s home, right?. I really hope these kids work things out. I’m not sure my heart can take anymore 😫
