[to Sonny: 1:23 PM]no, you don’t have to come over. I’ll be okay. I know you have a lot on your plate. thank you for offering. dinner tomorrow?
[from Sonny: 1:24 PM] don’t be ridiculous, doll. I’ll come over tonight, bring your favorites for dinner?
[to Sonny: 1:25 PM]really, sonny. you don’t have to. we have tomorrow. I’m not great company today.
[from Sonny: 1:27 PM]okay. I love you.
—————
You were having a horrible day and between your family member’s death and your own sickness your anxiety was running rampant. It had taken all of the strength and energy you had to tell Sonny that he didn’t need to come over later that night after he got off of work. You didn’t really want to be alone, truthfully, but you hated feeling like a burden. The guilt of burdening Sonny with your troubles in the midst of his latest case was too much to bear and you resolved to cope by yourself for the night. Hopefully by the next day you would be feeling better and be more like your usual self.
The hours passed lethargically as you tried to distract yourself first with reading and then by watching your favorite make-up Youtuber. You usually loved her tutorials, but today you couldn’t get yourself to concentrate and you ended up saving the video to watch later. The apartment was too quiet with just you and no background noise so you switched on reruns of one of your favorite shows to keep you company. It halfway kept your attention and the next time your attention was drawn away it was by a knock at the door. You weren’t expecting anyone and hadn’t even gotten to thinking about dinner plans so you frowned a little before going over to answer it.
“It’s me, doll,” Sonny called through the door as if he sensed your confusion through the door. You opened the door quickly for him and he smiled sheepishly as he held up a brown paper grover bag in his arms. “Hope you don’t mind that I came over anyway.” You smiled despite yourself and some of the warmth that had leeched away ever since you had gotten the bad news began to seep back into your bones.
[To: Sonny 1:23PM] Your mom brought these today for Nicholas and Ethan. 🐻🤣 Aren’t they adorable?
[From: Sonny 1:25PM] 🙄 Where does she find this stuff? Remember Ryan and the bunny costume?
[To: Sonny 1:28PM] I love them! You’re mom made them.. By the way she has already asked if you’ll be home “at a decent hour for dinner.” Want to know her other question?
[From: Sonny 1:32PM] Reassure her I’ll be home for dinner at 5:30. What was her other question?
[To: Sonny 1:35PM] “When am I gonna get another grandbaby? You and Sonny aren’t gettin’ any younger.” That is a quote. Then she patted my belly.
[From: Sonny 1:37PM] Oh my God. Thank you for not hitting my ma.
[To: Sonny 11:30PM] I know you’re still up studying and probably exhausted. I want to tell you how proud I am of you. Not only do have a job that taxes you physically and emotionally, you are going to law school. Yet somehow you always have time for me and the kids. You are truly amazing Sonny Carisi. I love you.❤❤
[From: Sonny 11:33PM] I needed this. I truly doubt myself sometimes.I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you. You always have my back. I wouldn’t have made it this far without you. And I love you doll. More than you’ll ever know ❤😘
Mike’s still tired when he wakes up to Peter rustling in the dark to get ready. His days off don’t always line up with his husband’s, leaving all intimacy to rushed moments before they split for the day. Squinting in the low light, he props himself up on his elbows with a rustling sound that gets Peter’s attention.
“Didn’t mean to wake you, sorry.”
“No, ‘s okay,” Mike mumbles.
He barely sees anything but shadows when Peter comes to the side of the bed to cup Mike’s face and kiss him. Already he tastes like coffee and smells like crisp cologne, his hands smooth and warm. If Mike had woken up a few minutes later, he no doubt would’ve missed him entirely.
After a couple seconds, Peter pulls away and says goodbye, telling Mike softly to go back to sleep and get the rest he’s so rarely allowed.
Let’s be honest – we all forget to leave a comment sometimes. We don’t always go out of our way to click the “come talk to me on tumblr” link on AO3 to scream about the fic in the author’s inbox. On August 21st I encourage you to take a moment and show fanfic writers that you appreciate them!
How can you do it?
leave a comment and kudos on every fic you finish reading. Doesn’t matter how short. Doesn’t matter if you’re just repeating what other people have already said. Just be kind! Keysmashing, Caps Lock, and live commenting appreciated! (Bonus points if you leave a comment on every chapter)
floaty review box for ao3 (super useful for commenting as you read + it has a ‘review tips’ button if you feel stuck)
reblog ficlets, drabbles, fics, fic rec posts, etc. Put a nice comment in the tags. Remember that likes, while appreciated, don’t give the writer any exposure, meaning the posts don’t reach more people
go to your local fanfic writer’s inbox and talk to them about their fic of your choice. Let them know how long ago you’ve read it and what story point/sentence/scene still makes you smile when you think about it
send thank you messages to fic writers. In a world where you have to pay for almost everything, they’re supplying you with countless hours of free entertainment. It can get quite lonely without getting messages acknowledging the hours they spend writing stories – let them know their time and effort is appreciated
make fic rec posts and @ the authors whose fics you’re recommending! (believe me, fic writers love to see their stories in these posts)
create something inspired by a fic! You can draw fanart, make a moodboard or aesthetic post, or even write a song for the fic you love. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro doesn’t matter – the thought alone is what counts more than anything ❤
buy the writer a coffee if they have a ko-fi page and you have some change lying around c: Caffeine keeps most fic writers awake when they struggle with a particularly slow draft or a difficult scene. More coffee, more content.
These are only some ideas out of the sea of possible ways to appreciate fanfic writers. On August 21st show the writers in your fandom(s) some love ❤
