“Something’s here,” Sonny says softly, glancing at Peter. “Close by. Watching.”

“How do you know?”

He pulls his crucifix from beneath his over shirt by the chain to show Peter that it’s glowing so warm it’s almost gone orange. It’s the whole reason Sonny’s started wearing multiple layers in the first place; his sternum has a faint cross shaped burn scar on it from the lesson he learned the hard way.

“Whoever’s here, come out. You don’t scare me.”

Sonny shoots him a nervous look. He’s never liked antagonizing entities to get them to show themselves. Too many adverse experiences with angry spirits have left their mark. But Peter’s gotten good at this, and at protecting Sonny when things get too intense. Carefully walking forward in the basement, Peter listens until he hears something hit the wall.

“Don’t be a coward, show yourself!”

“Peter!” Sonny hisses.

Something else slams against the wall and the door to the basement locks ominously. They’re not going anywhere now.

Sonny hadn’t slept in three nights. When he came home that evening, you knew he had been drinking. You had seen the news that day. It broke your heart just watching it on TV. Sonny had been there. He had talked Sam down. Sonny was a strong man. Not only physically but emotinally. But honestly, you weren’t sure how much more he could take.

Sonny turned over to face you. He smiled seeing you next to him. “Mornin’ doll.” Sonny reached for you, wrapping his arms around you and resting his head on your chest.

You snaked an arm around his shoulders, while the other gently stroked his hair. You placed a kiss to his temple. “I’m here. Whenever you’re ready.”
