also, what happens when reader and Sonny find out about Nick’s childhood? I imagine Sonny would want to talk to him about it bc of the way it affects their relationship, and I’d be interested to see how that conversation goes. (2/2)
one of the reasons I sat on this for so long was because I wasn’t sure of the direction I wanted to take it in. I wrote it and rewrote it about a dozen times in my head, but just had the idea to go with a completely different concept than what I had planned, so this is what we have. 🙂

The question hung in the room above the bed like vapor before dissolving in the silence that followed.
Nick had come home the day before upset about his father dropping by the precinct after apparently being in town. Sonny had been his usual self, gregarious and engaging Nicolas in Nick’s absence, and when Nick had seen the two of them laughing the day had gone downhill. You only really caught the brunt of the end of the day, with both men subdued and dancing around each other at home as the topic sat heavily on both of them. Nick hadn’t said much to you other than that his father was not a good person. You’d gently pointed out that Sonny had no way of knowing that given Nick’s usual tight-lipped approach to his father and he’d had to agree with you. It still hadn’t really released all of the tension in the apartment and you had all gotten what you were sure was a restless night’s sleep.
Now the three of you were awake in bed and Sonny had whispered the question bravely into the quiet room as the sun slowly threw lines of light across the floorboards. You held your breath to see how Nick would respond.
“He…he beat my mom,” Nick replied quietly. You let out your breath and inched your fingers up Nick’s side where your arm was thrown over him. “And when I got bold enough to step in, he’d do the same to me. He was…is…a monster.”
You exchanged a look with Sonny over Nick’s chest and took a deep breath before responding. “I’m so sorry, Nick,” you replied genuinely. You swept your hand over his rib cage again and pressed a kiss to his shoulder. “I’m so sorry you had to endure that.”
“I wish I had known,” Sonny started darkly. “I would have decked him.”
“Right in the middle of the precinct?” Nick asked skeptically.
“Absolutely,” Sonny confirmed vehemently. “Right there. In front of lieu and God and the squad.”
“Noticed that Olivia came before God,” you murmured under your breath. The tension was broken as the three of you laughed a little.
“I’m sorry, Nick,” Sonny apologized once the three of you had quieted down. “If I had known…I’d never—”
“I know,” Nick interrupted around a slight grimace. “I overreacted. I’m sorry, too.”
“You don’t need to apologize,” Sonny disagreed. “I understand.”
“I guess the big question is, what does he want?” you followed up after another beat. The beams of light across the floor stretched out and grew fatter, but you ignored them in favor of cuddling into Nick’s side.
“And how long is he in town for?” Nick added in a brittle tone.
None of you had any answer for that so you burrowed into each other and took comfort in what you had in the moment. Each other.
“I literally cannot stop staring at him,” Sonny whispered. “We made him.” Sonny continued to watch Ryan in amazement. “He’s just perfect.”
It made your heart full to see how much Sonny loved your first born. “He is pretty darn cute. Just like his Daddy,” you complimened Sonny then tapped his nose with your finger. “We’re lucky to have you.”
Sonny was getting teary eyed. He was just as emotional as you. It was one of the many things you loved about him. He wore his heart on his sleeve. Sonny covered your hand with his where you had it resting on the crib rail. “Doll, I’m the lucky one,” he said and placed a kiss to your temple.
“How long have you been up?,” you asked as took the seat beside Nick at the table. The decision to move from Narcotics to SVU had been weighing on him heavily.
“Well, I watched the sun come up,” he replied with a chuckle, leaning over to kiss you. His beard tickled your face causing you to crinkle your nose.
“I haven’t seen a sunrise since Owen was a baby. Seems I’ll be enjoying them again in about 7 months,” you mused as you ran your fingers through Nick’s wild, curly hair.
His gaze shifted to you. “You-you’re pregnant? Really?” NIck turned to face you and took your face in his hands. “I didn’t think we-” Nick touched his forehead to yours.
“I know. Me too,” you ageed. “You’re going to be a Papi again,” you confirmed with a smile.
Nick’s eyes shined with unshed tears. “This is-I…I’m so happy. Gracias mi amor.”
Rafael had expected many people to ignore him at Olivias Hanukkah party, but the one who did was the least expected and also hurt him the most. Stone had made small talk about the job, about certain colleagues. Rollins and Tutuola had both said hi. But Sonny Carisi had been a wall of stony silence the entire time, a stark contrast to the eager, puppy dog demeanour he had had during most of Barba’s time as ADA.
He wasn’t going to push it, it was clear Carisi had made his decision, and really, Barba hadn’t done anything to earn a different reaction. But the more Carisi stubbornly ignored even looking at Barba the sharper the pain in his chest became, and combined with the alcohol he was tipping back in an attempt to subdue that pain, Barba wasn’t really thinking properly. Which is probably why he followed Carisi into the kitchen when he went to get a refill, closing the door behind him and making sure that Carisi and him were finally alone, together.
