the old ladies reflect on the past & look ahead at the future
You squeezed the trigger again. The power felt good. The kickback was a familiar feeling and you narrowed your eyes at the target that was far off in the field ahead of you. Not quite center, but still in the same cluster of the other shots on this target. You let the gun drop by your side and pulled the empty magazine out as she fired her last shot beside you. She turned to you with a smile and you tried your best to return it.
“I always forget how much better of a shot you are than me,” Sonny’s fiancée called to you.
You shook your head and ducked your chin on the compliment. It was true, but the words still made you uncomfortable. But you, even after everything you had been through, you had a feeling you’d still hesitate. That truth chafed at the inside of you and burned something fierce in your lower belly. Weak.
“I just have more practice,” you finally answered. It was a beat too late, but you knew she’d let it slide.
