“Tell me how it feels,” Nick murmured suddenly.

They were laying in the bed in a patch of buttery sunlight. It was early in the way that summer days dawned energetically full of bright light and neither of them had anywhere to be that Saturday. Loose plans had been outlined, but right now they were relishing an all too rare opportunity to lay in bed together.

“Hmm?” Sonny hummed. “How what feels?” He dragged his hand along Nick’s back and his leg twitched a little where it twined more firmly with Nick’s under the covers. The sheets were miraculously still cool to the touch– Sonny made a mental note to brag about the fact because Nick had found the price tag ridiculous– and he twisted his head a little on his pillow.

“To grow up in a loud house. So full of people.” Nick’s voice was subdued and trying for lightness, but Sonny sensed the undercurrent of melancholy in his tone.

“Chaotic,” Sonny answered after a beat. He kept his voice purposefully light as well. “Mercurial in the way a house full of teenagers can be. Over the top. It was easy for one person to get lost in the shuffle in any given time.” His answer was honest and he avoided fixating on the parts that would surely make Nick more melancholic.

“Did you get lost a lot?” Nick asked quietly. His voice was hushed and Sonny wished he could read Nick’s mind.

“Sometimes.”

A hum in response as Nick sank back into silence. His fingers ghosted along Sonny’s ribcage and Sonny squirmed and smiled. They continued their journey down Sonny’s side, landing on the slight curve right at his hip bone, and digging in firmly.

“I wish I knew what it was like,” Nick admitted wistfully against Sonny’s skin.

He had turned his face into Sonny’s chest was firmly and shifted to avoid having the sun directly in his eyes. Even behind his eyelids the room was bright and he pretended that the light was coming from Sonny instead of outside their window. The world began and ended in their own microcosm.

“You will,” Sonny reassured him quietly. “We’ll have a house full of mini Nicks and they’ll all be as beautiful and smart as their dad.”

“As both of their fathers,” Nick corrected finally raising his face to look Sonny squarely in the eye.

“Exactly.” Sonny ran his thumb along Nick’s bottom lip as the rest of his fingers rested on Nick’s neck.

“And no one will be lost,” Nick promised firmly. Sonny nodded once with a brief smile before he leaned in to kiss Nick. Nick felt as if golden light was pouring directly into his mouth and he smiled and deepened the kiss.
