Liam and Layla: 6
“Daddy! Daddy! Can we go see the puppies?” Layla asked as they had walked past an animal shelter. Mike couldn’t say no to the twins, so he nodded and headed over. Liam and Layla instantly ran to where the dogs were and looked into each of the cages.
“Daddy, look at him!” Liam said as he pointed to a chocolate colored lab. Mike smiled at the boy as he got down to his height.
“Cute, isn’t he? Where’s your sister?” Mike looked around and heard the squeals and giggles of his daughter. Mike stood and turned the corner to see a pug licking Layla’s face.
“Daddy! He loves me! Can we take him home? Pleaseeeeeeeeee.” Layla asked as she got the dog to settle down and was gently petting it.
“I don’t think your mother would approve. We should get home before she starts yelling at us for being late to dinner. Say goodbye to the puppy.” Mike told Layla. She frowned as she hugged the puppy before grabbing her father’s hand and leave the shelter.
All throughout the week, Layla had kept asking Mike for a pet. She promised to keep her room clean and do her chores for a month. Eventually she got Liam to join in since she convinced him a puppy would be a new friend to play with. Mike and you kept saying no and every time the kids mentioned the puppy, you glared him down.
By the end of the week, the twins quit asking. Mike as relieved but watching his daughter push her food around her plate at lunch made his frown.
“What’s wrong Layla?” She slowly looked up at her father.
“Why can’t we get a puppy? I promised to take care of it…” Mike sighed as he watched her.
“A puppy takes a lot of responsibility, Layla. Mommy and daddy both work and you and Liam go to school. Leaving the puppy alone all day. They need a lot of care and attention.” Mike tried explaining. Layla slowly looked over at her father.
“A puppy is like a baby?” Mike chuckled some and nodded.
“A puppy is like a baby, sweetie. You see how auntie Liv gets with baby Noah. He takes up a lot of her time.” Mike explained. Layla slowly nodded as she watched her father.
“Can we get a puppy when I’m eight?” Layla said. Mike laughed as he watched the girl.
“We’ll see, Layla. We’ll see.”
Love me some Mike!
