“Anxious to get home?” Veronica asked gently after you checked your phone and tossed it back onto your lap with a small sigh.
The two of you had had a girl’s day with a little bit of shopping and lunch and now the two of you were headed back to your house. She’d insisted on only taking one car to be mindful of the environment and now you felt her glance over at you briefly to study your expression.
“Sorry,” you apologized with a smile. “Sonny and I got into an argument this morning and it’s just one of those things…” you trailed off as you struggled to explain.
“Hate to leave the house angry?” she filled in as she smoothly turned the corner. You nodded and laughed a little as you ran a hand through your hair.
“Yeah. Silly, huh?” you commented with a rueful expression. She quirked her eyebrows together and shook her head.
“Not at all. It’s cute. You guys are cute. Can’t believe you’ve been together for so long,” she replied with an easy smile. You smiled despite the morning’s frustrations and looked out the window.
“I know. It’s been a ride,” you answered which had to be one of the understatements of the year.
“Think Andre and I…?” she let her sentence trail off and you turned back to look at her.
“Maybe. Possibly. It’s not easy, but for Sonny and I it’s worth it,” you answered honestly. “How are things with the two of you?”
“Good, I think,” she answered with an unsure shrug. “Good. We go on dates. He texts me. He says he’s going to do something or be somewhere and he is. I just…” she trailed off and you stayed quiet to let her collect her words. “What do you know about Andre? From when he was younger?”
You shook your head and tried to think. “Not much, to be honest. He went to a different high school so I don’t know really anything about him before the MC. I know about his sister…his brother Joey from talking to Nick’s old lady. I think Matt may know more? They went to the same school. Want me to do some digging?” you asked in concern. Veronica shook her head no and bit her bottom lip.
“No, that’s okay,” she offered you a grateful smile. “Just wondering. I mean…he’s got his nickname and it’s hard for me to reconcile with the baby faced smiling man I know. Even after Kevin,” she went in more subdued tone. You looked over at her sharply and studied her face.
“You know about that?” you asked carefully. She shot you an unimpressed look as she turned on your street.
“Of course. He didn’t tell me much, but our friendly neighborhood sheriff did. Andre just sad he’d taken care of it and not to worry. I covered for him with Lawrence and that was that. Just makes me think,” she said in an unreadable voice.
“He’s got the nickname Razor for a reason, V,” you reminded her gently and she nodded and peered out the windshield. “That’s…what you get when you’re with a member of the club. Someone who would do everything in their power, legal or not, to keep you safe.”
“I know. I know. It’s not that I—it’s just weird because to me he’s just sweet Andre,” she said with a wry smile and another glance in your direction.
“Yeah, and to me Sonny is my sweet sunshine. But to people who wish me or the club harm…” you trailed off with a pointed look. “Listen, let me tell you a story before I get out of the car, okay?” you said as she pulled into the driveway and parked. Veronica nodded and tapped out something on her phone quickly before putting it away and turning to look at you. You glanced up at the house and then turned your attention back to her.
“When I was in college my senior year I had a stalker. This was about six months after Sonny’s dad was killed and he became president. He had a lot on his plate so I didn’t tell him for awhile. One day I found an envelope of pictures—literally who even prints pictures these days—shoved under my apartment door. I lived in a secure building, allegedly, so that really freaked me out. Then I looked at the pictures. They were pictures of me all over campus: going to class, eating, talking to friends, walking home, even one of me in my apartment. I told Sonny immediately, called him pretty late at night because I was scared. I even knew who the guy was, but you and I both know that that means nothing to campus security or the police,” you continued and you took a breath and glanced up at the house again before going on.
“Sonny must have gotten straight on his bike because about two hours later he was calling me to get buzzed up at my place. Mind you, at this point it’s like one in the morning. He didn’t even look at the pictures then, just made sure my apartment was secure and put me to bed. I don’t have proof that he stayed up all night, because I was exhausted, but the next morning when I woke up he was already up and making me breakfast,” you paused again to check Veronica’s expression and her brow was furrowed in concern. It wasn’t a funny story, but you smiled a little recounting it. “I’m expecting him to come to my classes with me, look menacing, etc. He doesn’t really do that. He walks me to my first class and this guy is just outside my apartment as we exit. Sonny doesn’t say anything, but I can practically hear the gears turning. He deposits me at my first class and when I come out he’s there waiting with more coffee. This happened more or less for the rest of me classes that day, I only had two more. I got the distinct impression that he wasn’t just waiting for me the entire time because one of the times he was out of breath as if he had gone someplace and then rushed to get back.”
“Back at the apartment I notice that there’s new locks on my windows and new screens up. Sonny doesn’t say anything about it and he makes me study and he orders in. A few hours later he announces that he has to meet up with my dad there on campus. Naturally I have about a hundred questions, but he won’t answer any of them. Just tells me to stay in the apartment with the door locked and shoot anyone who knocks on the door over the next hour. He promises to be back in an hour and then leaves. So of course I’m sitting there scared and wondering what he’s going to do. I text my dad—no answer. I text Sonny, he tells me I should be studying,” you laughed and shook your head a little. “Typical. True to his word an hour later he calls to be buzzed up. I let him into my apartment and aside from the fact that he’s wearing different clothes and has wet hair he doesn’t say anything about where he was. I drop it after awhile, but as we’re getting into bed he tells me he has to leave in the morning to go back home. The fact that he was able to drop everything and come see me on such short notice was shocking in and of itself so I don’t mind at all, but I’m still a bit leery of my stalker. His name was Jim, by the way.”
“So finally I say something. I said, ‘okay, I understand, but what about Jim. I’m still scared, Sonny.’ And he gives me this look and it still sends a shiver down my spine to think about it. He gives me this look and just says my name. After a beat of silence he just says that he took care of Jim and that he won’t be bothering me again. Then he gently pushed me under the sheets and pulled me into his arms and knocked out. I was up half the night cycling through scenarios. But I didn’t have to worry about Jim, just like Sonny said,” you finished with a faint smile.
“What happened to him?” Veronica asked softly as you unbuckled your seatbelt and grabbed your bags from the floor by your feet.
“You’d have to ask Sonny,” you reply lightly with a raised eyebrow. “Good luck getting a straight answer, though. Jim went missing that week and he wasn’t heard of at school again. Someone said they think he dropped out and skipped town.” You gave her a knowing look as her eyebrows rose.
“He killed him,” she filled in. You made a face and shifted your bags.
“Could be. Could have been my dad. Could be he gave Jim a bus ticket and a strong threat. The fact is that he took care of it, he took care of me, just like he always promised. Razor will do that for you, too, if you let him. But make no mistake, being involved in the MC life, even on the fringes, comes with it’s own danger,” you warned her seriously.
“Do you think it’s worth it?” she asked with a glance up towards the house. “Is this what you want forever?”
“More than anything. It’s worth it to me because Sonny’s worth it to me. I’ll be here until he can’t ride anymore. He’s the love of my life. It’s not all hard and violent, though,” you added with a growing smile. “Our fight this morning had nothing to do with the MC.”
“Alright. You better get out of here before he thinks I’ve kidnapped you and then he does to me whatever he did to Jim,” Veronica said drily with a small smile. You laughed and leaned forward to pull her into a one armed hug.
“Don’t be silly. Sonny would never do anything to my friends. Thank you for this. I had a fun time. I’m sorry if I was a little mopey,” you apologized as you started to get out of the car.
“I had fun! Trust me, I understand so it didn’t bother me at all. Knowing Sonny he probably has a three course meal and flowers to apologize to you,” she teased. Your smile widened as you pushed off the seat and you turned to look at her before you closed the door.
“Maybe,” you said coyly and she just laughed and shook her head again as you closed the door behind you. With one last wave to her you turned and started up the driveway.
You pushed open the front door and let the bags fall to the ground, startled by the flower petals you saw scattered there as you looked down. You frowned a little and looked back towards the front door as if you could see through it and to Veronica who was in her car driving away. You had been joking when you’d said maybe a few moments ago, but maybe she knew something that you didn’t.
“Sonny?” you called as you looked around. You didn’t hear a reply, but as you looked closer you realized the petals formed a path towards the door to the patio. You followed it slowly, still a bit leery about what was going on.
“Sonny?” you called again as you pushed the sliding glass door open and stepped out onto the deck. The backyard was illuminated with fairy lights he must have just put up and as the sun began to set they shone brighter and brighter in the growing dimness.
“Hi doll,” Sonny greeted in a quiet voice and you whirled to see where he was standing to the edge of the deck and just down the stairs that led to the rest of the backyard.
“Hi,” you breathed as you stepped closer and descended the stairs towards him. “What’s all this? Think I should be the one apologizing after this morning,” you joked. Sonny chuckled lightly and ducked his head as he reached out to grab your hand and pull you closer to him.
“Don’t care about any of that right now. I overreacted,” he dismissed and you shook your head and leaned up on your tip toes to kiss him.
“No you didn’t. I should have run it by you. I wasn’t thinking. I’m sorry,” you apologized softly.
“You were just being a good friend,” he contradicted and you smiled at his stubbornness.
You’d agreed to cover a co-worker’s shift that week which meant working an extra day, but hadn’t run it past Sonny before agreeing. He’d been upset you hadn’t given him a heads up and you’d been upset that he thought he was entitled to it. It felt stupid now but you remember being so angry when you’d left that morning.
“I’m just so happy to have you home and have things be back to normal. I don’t care about being right. I just want you here with me,” Sonny said gently and you felt yourself melt a little.
“You always know the right things to say,” you accused with a smile as you kissed him again.
“It’s the truth. Everything else can go to hell as long as I have you. I know it hasn’t been easy,” Sonny continued and you felt yourself freeze for a moment as he shifted uncomfortably. “I know I’m—”
“The love of my life,” you interrupted fervently and he smiled and ran a hand through his hair.
“Not perfect,” he corrected gently and you rolled your eyes. “Sharing the last twelve years with you has been an immense honor. I want to take care of you forever and it brings me a lot of pride and joy to know that your dad blessed not only this house, but also our relationship,” he went on and you felt your eyes get a little watery at his mention. Sonny thumbed under your eye and pressed another kiss to your lips gently.
“We have many more decades ahead of us, tough times and good times, a lot more phenomenal sex,” this made you laugh as you brushed the rest of your tears away and Sonny gave you a cheeky smile. “A lot more clothes sharing—”
“I like your shirts better than mine,” you interrupted with a shrug and Sonny winked.
“A lot more take out in bed and dumb fights and apologies and anniversaries. But, if you’ll let me, I’d like to add one more anniversary to that list,” he went on. You frowned a little in question and when he dropped to one knee you brought a hand up to your mouth in surprise and focused on forcing your knees to hold you up.
“I’d like to add a wedding anniversary to that list one day soon. Doll, will you make me the luckiest bastard this side of heaven? Will you marry me?”

This makes me so happy!
