“Well,” you announced as you picked up the remote to turn the television off, “I’m off to read in bed. There’s nothing on.” Nick was coming out of the kitchen with a beer and he paused in taking a sip and leered at you which you responded to with a smile and roll of your eyes.
“I can think of something more entertaining than reading,” he promised as he sauntered towards you. “Sonny, you going to join us?” he asked over his shoulder.
You got to your feet and peeked over to see Sonny’s reaction. He was sitting at the kitchen table with files in front of him in the same place he’d been planted since dinner. He’d been a bit subdued all evening, but had kept up conversation during dinner easily enough. Now he didn’t even look up to glance a Nick, turning a page on something he was reading before replying.
