Nick and Sonny leaned against the bar and nursed the end of their drinks. They had just wrapped an informal meeting with Fin and both of their old ladies were waiting for them on a couch in the corner, ready to go home and have some time alone. Sonny’s phone buzzed and he tore his eyes away from where he was drinking in his fiancee and glanced at his text messages. Olivia’s name lit up on the screen and he sighed and pocketed the phone. Whatever it was, it could wait until tomorrow.
“Do you think we are bad people?” Nick asked in a low voice. Sonny looked at him out of the corner of his eye, most of his attention still across the room as he downed the last swig of his drink. He made a face since it was mostly water now before turning to face Nick more head on.
“Bad people?” Sonny asked in lieu of giving him an immediate answer. Nick nodded and swirled the last ice cube around in his glass before setting the glass down on the bar.
“We do bad things, Sonny. We hurt people. We lie. We cheat,” Sonny inhaled sharply and Nick corrected himself hastily. “We cheat people out of their money. We—” he went on, but Sonny interrupted.
“This isn’t the place for this conversation, Nick,” he cut in firmly with a quick glance around the room.
So far the mixing of their worlds had gone fine in their small establishment, but outright admitting to criminal activity was never a good idea outside of the club house where they could be sure no one was eavesdropping.
“For what it’s worth, I don’t think so, no. We don’t cheat anyone out of their money. This is a good place and everyone gets what they want here,” Nick opened his mouth to clarify, but Sonny cut him off this time.
“We hurt people who deserve it and we’ve never lied to the people who matter. This is our life and it’s one we both chose willingly.” Nick nodded and sucked his teeth a little, thinking and finding their sudden role reversal a little ironic.
“Going to take my girl home,” he said finally. “Hold on to what’s good.”
“Makes two of us,” Sonny answered as he pushed off the bar. He looked back over his shoulder and paused for a moment with a smirk. “Gotta tell you. Sex gets way better once you’re engaged.”
