“There’s never enough time. You just have to make use of what you have.” Bonnie and Clyde?

carisi-dreams:

“Babe?” you called softly in the direction of the hall.

Sonny had gotten up and disappeared down it several minutes again, mentioning a desire to go get something from the bedroom. The two of you were enjoying a quiet night in after having put Liv down to sleep an hour ago. When you didn’t get a response you brought your wine glass up to your lips to finish it off before setting it down and pushing to your feet. The baby monitor sitting on the coffee table was silent, just an occasional crackling sound, but you know better than anyone that Sonny could be silent when he wanted to be.

You padded down the hall slowly, in no rush and being almost entirely sure where he had gotten off to. The door to her bedroom was in the exact position the two of you had left it in, but that didn’t mean anything. Sonny was anything if not excellent at covering his tracks. Almost as good as you. You pushed the door further open slowly, scanning the room for signs of him. It took you a second to spot where he was sitting on the floor against the wall across from the crib. His knees were pulled up to his chest and the light from the hallway briefly illuminated his eyes before you stepped further into the room.

You crossed the room with a soft smile, sinking into a seat next to him. Sonny wrapped an arm around you immediately, breaking eye contact with the crib for a moment to drop a kiss on your head.

“Just going to leave me hanging, huh?” you teased in a whisper. He squeezed you tighter and huffed out laughter, but remained otherwise silent. The two of you sat watching her sleep peacefully for several minutes and you were struck by how all of the important things to you were in that room in that moment.

“She’s growing so quickly,” Sonny whispered finally and there was an edge of anxiety in his voice. You patted his knee reassuringly and tilted your head to rest on his shoulder.

“That’s what they do, you know—grow,” you reminded him gently and he sighed.

“I just feel like…I want more time. I want more time in each stage and she’s just flying through them. Must take after her mom that way,” he whispered back and finally some humor bled into his tone.

“There’s never enough time. You just have to make use of what you have,” you replied. “And just imagine what it’s going to be like when she can communicate with us and we understand her,” you said in an amused tone. Sonny laughed for real this time, muffling it into his opposite shoulder and you smiled widely as you felt his shoulders shake.

“Yeah, you’re right…that will be nice. Can’t wait to teach her how to drive.”
