When you get home, Sonny’s sitting on the couch with a bunch of small squares spread out in front of hit. Your heart drops because you know exactly what they are. None of them match the one in your pocket, but they’re all similar pictures. Another one of Nick sleeping, this time with his head resting on a lap. One of him awake but not looking at the camera, examining a brand new knife you’ve never seen. The last one sticks out the most and gives you a bad feeling. The subject of the picture is facing away from the camera, figure blurred by the shower water cascading around it. You’re certain that it’s Nick too, based on the body shape, the hair, and the tattoos on his back. Wordlessly you add your photo to the pile.
“Peter won’t help.”
He looks up at you suddenly. “Doll, please don’t tell me-”
“It doesn’t matter, he said no. And he knows who has Nick but he wouldn’t tell me.”
“I know who it is,” Sonny says quietly. “Mike Dodds.”
“The Mike Dodds who held you hostage for five years?”
He doesn’t answer, which tells you enough. You sit beside him on the couch and look at the collection accompanying a handwritten note presumably from Mike. When you read it, you feel like crying.
“Sonny, he’s coming back,” you say for the millionth time. You’re not sure if it’s more for yourself than him at this point. “He won’t leave us forever.”
Instead of answering, Sonny hands you Nick’s ring and gathers up the photos and note to throw away. You can tell he thinks that Nick went to Mike just to upset him, and maybe that’s how it started, you’re not sure. But there’s no way in hell that Nick would just drop of the face of the Earth without so much as calling. He told you he still loved you and that he didn’t want to lose you. There’s something really, really, really wrong and you’re going to figure it out. Even if you have to do it yourself.
