You blinked slowly up at the man sitting in a chair next to you. He had a handsome face, piercing blue eyes and a soft and open expression on his face. You felt yourself blush, but the shyness was muffled as if it was coming from a long ways away. He was easily the most attractive man you’d ever seen and you had no idea who he was, but you couldn’t resist speaking to him.
“Who’re you?” you asked and the words felt cottony on your tongue, thick and softer than usual in your mouth. The man smiled and reached out a hand for you.
“I’m Sonny,” he replied gently and you frowned. There was something tugging at the back of your mind that said you should know who this was, but it couldn’t penetrate the fleecy veil of confusion surrounding your brain.
“Sonny…? You…like the sun? Are you my nurse?” you asked slowly and Sonny laughed and ducked his head, shaking it in obvious amusement.
“You could say that. I’ll be the person taking care of you when we get home today,” he replied in an amused tone and distantly you registered pain somewhere in your body as the anesthesia wore off slowly.
“…home?” you repeated in a confused tone, words still soft in your mouth. Sonny’s fingers fidgeted where he was holding your hand and you peered down to look at his hand. Long fingers, firm grip and a shiny band on his ring finger. “Are you married?” you asked, feeling as if you should pull away even though his hand felt so good around yours. Sonny laughed again and tapped his wedding band with his other hand.
“I am,” he answered with the same smile from before. “To you,” he added as he gently tugged your other hand into your lap and fingered your left ring finger where two rings rested. Your eyes widened and you looked between the rings on your finger to his to his face. Sonny still looked amused, but there was something nervous at the edges of it.
“I’m married to you?” you breathed slowly, still incredulous and Sonny nodded. His smile was slowly fading and you squeezed his hand.
“This is the best day of my life,” you said sincerely, looking deeply into his eyes and tracing over his face. “You’re…oh my God, you’re my husband. I hit the jackpot. This is better than the lottery,” you muttered mostly to yourself, still drinking him in. You noticed the bit of grey hair at his temples and the strong line of his shoulders under his black henley and sighed to yourself. “You’re the hottest man I’ve ever seen in my life,” you added, feeling emboldened by this reveal. Sonny’s smile was back in full force and he pinked slightly.
“Yeah? Not having any buyer’s remorse?” he joked and you narrowed your eyes against the uncertainty you heard in his voice underlying that question.
“Can I marry you again? Today? I’d marry you every day if I could, oh my gosh. How long have we been married?” you asked, words running together slightly as you rushed to get them out of your mouth.
“Just over a year,” Sonny replied as he shifted in his seat. You both looked up when the door opened and a nurse came in the room holding a cup of water in one hand. Looking back over at Sonny your jaw dropped a little at how incredible his profile looked.
“Oh my gosh,” you breathed again to yourself. “Better than Disney. I—,” you paused and turned to the nurse who had reached your side by now. “Did you know that I’m married?” you asked her and she nodded and smiled gently, handing the cup of water to Sonny. He disentangled his fingers from you in order to hold the cup with one hand and keep the straw steady with the other. You took a sip before turning back to her. “Like…I’m married to him. To him! Can you believe it? Look at him!” you continued enthusiastically.
“Come on sweetheart, drink some more water for me,” Sonny urged gently and you complied, mouth missing the straw the first time before you latched on. You took a few sips before you just sat with the straw in your mouth staring up in Sonny’s face. “Are you even still drinking?” he asked when he finally clued in and you gave him a sheepish smile and shook your head as you pulled back.
“Can’t believe we’re married,” you mumbled again and he glanced up at the nurse with a raised eyebrow.
“It will wear off in the next hour or so,” she was saying over your head, but you weren’t paying her any attention. Reaching out a hand for Sonny’s face he looked back at you and caught it, cupping it in both of his hands and pressing a small kiss to your knuckles.
“You’re like a model…wanna touch you. Can we go home now?”
This is so cute!
