The first question Sonny asks after the bugs have all been destroyed is about the rings. You and Nick have matching brushed gold bands- yours you always forget is there, but his he plays with when he’s nervous. Like now, he spins it around his finger and watches Sonny like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“We got married,” Nick says, “about two years ago.”
“Why?” Sonny asks.
His face is strained, hurt. You want to kiss the sadness away but you’re not sure if you can. You’ve never stopped loving him, aren’t sure if you ever can, but you love Nick just as much. It’s a mess now.
“We’re in love. We thought you were dead.”
“So you moved in on her as soon as I was out of the picture?” he spits at Nick. “Were you just waiting for me to vanish?”
“It’s not like that and you know it. Besides, you shouldn’t be interrogating us. Where did you go? Why did you let us think you were dead? Why didn’t you say something? Why did you know about the cameras? Whose body was in the river?”
“I wish I could explain,” he says.
Nick rolls his eyes and stands up, about to storm away when Sonny pulls something from his backpack. The casing is familiar- Nick’s knifes. He takes them with a look on his face that goes from relieved to excited to angry.
“Dodds.”
Sonny won’t look him in the eye.
